Today Solly, our wine expert, will answer the question:

What is a cultivar?

It is the name given to a grape variety.

What cultivars do we have?

  • Sauvignon Blanc – originates from Bordeaux in France
  • Chardonnay – this variety originated from Burgundy in France
  • Pinot Noir – originates from Burgundy

How old is the oldest cultivar?

The oldest grapevine dates back to Neolithic times 7000 years ago.

What is the most planted cultivar in South Africa?

Chenin Blanc.

Where did South African cultivars originate from?

Predominantly France.
