For true wine connoisseurs who enjoy exploring the wine country, South Africa offers some of the best vineyards and wine tasting in the world.

A visit to South Africa’s many wine routes is therefore an absolute “MUST” for those wishing to spend their holidays sipping wine & “bubbly”, mixing with wine specialists across the country and staying in beautiful wine country accommodation en route.

There are many wine routes in South Africa; some of the most famous being around Cape Town in Constantia, Stellenbosch, Helderberg, Durbanville, Paarl and Franschoek but as you venture out of the Cape, there is a lot more wine country to explore as you head up the Garden Route towards Knysna and Plettenberg Bay. Here you will find some of the lesser known wine estates, the more exclusive, the smaller family style ventures where the wine making takes priority over everything else to support the local industry, staff and families living on these estates. You will find that the wine farms in the Plett wine country all join forces at certain times of the year to share bottling and labelling processes to keep their economies of scale in track and to support each other where they can.

If you are thinking of spending your break in the Plett wine country bear in mind that not all these vineyards have accommodation options like they do in the Cape.

If you are a real wine “fundi” and would like to spend your holiday on the tranquil settings of a wine estate, then it’s a good idea to stay at Packwood, close to all the wine farms so that you can visit all the wine estates in the area without having to travel too far.

Packwood is actually one of the very first wine estates within Plett wine country and on the Plett wine route if you are travelling from Cape Town to PE along the Garden Route.
