Country accommodation – What to expect at Packwood
Choosing country accommodation for a relaxing holiday break can sometimes be a little daunting. Whilst we love open spaces and being out in the countryside, we still want to be close to popular activities and basic amenities, especially if self-catering.
A ‘get away from it all ‘ experience in the countryside is what country accommodation is all about; wellington boots, forest walks, blue skies, vineyards, cows in the distance and endless views, but at the end of the day we still love to have our creature comforts to come home to, even if they are of a more rustic nature, making the experience all the more delightful.
So, what to expect when booking rural country accommodation and more importantly, what to check before you go:
- If it’s located in the countryside it’s likely to boast a more homely vibe, plumped up sofas, home comforts, big fire places and a family-run style set-up, so in most cases don’t expect designer luxury, glitz and glamour, unless specified. Country accommodation establishments are often combined with other business ventures like farming or agriculture so pack your walking boots and go and enjoy the fresh air.
- If you book accommodation on a vineyard & dairy like Packwood Country Estate, bear in mind that the wine making operations and daily estate duties continue on a daily basis around you. Whilst your accommodation has its own privacy, be prepared to enjoy taking a wonder down to the vines to watch the grape picking (in season) or sample delicious Packwood cheeses and sip Packwood wines produced on your very own doorstep.
- It’s also always a good idea to understand the location of your country accommodation or lodge so that you know what attractions are within close driving proximity for day trips. Packwood is located about 30 minutes from both Plettenburg Bay and Knysna equally, which makes it ideal for exploring local attractions; the surrounding Knysna Forest, Plett Beaches, Knysna Elephant Park as well as having a multitude of shops and restaurants all within a 30 minute reach.
The Garden Route in South Africa offers plenty of rural country accommodation options but if you are looking for forest, space, vineyards, home comforts, locally produced treats, beautiful views and proximity to two of the most popular tourist towns in South Africa, choose Packwood as your base. It’s ideal for longer stays as our minimum night stay is three nights in low season and seven nights in December & January.
